Nothing lasts long in the NFL. Rarely does a team stay on a winning streak for a lengthy period. The NFL season is 17 games of a grueling grind. Injuries occur. Parity is everywhere. Matchups are unfavorable. Mother nature often has a say. Sometimes it’s just a bad day at the office. The Chiefs had all their key personnel, though they did lose an offensive lineman in the first half of the game. Sunday’s result was born out of the simple fact that the Bengals were a bad match up for them this week. When Joe Burrow is on, he and Ja’Marr Chase are a bad match up for anyone and everyone.
The Cowboys could win it all this year or get knocked out at home in the first round of the playoffs. I wouldn’t be surprised either way. That is the kind of blood pumping, head scratching, frustrating, exhilarating, exhausting, up and down season that they are having. After their opening night loss to the Bucs, the Cowboys were dominant, winning 6 in a row. I thought their season would be terminating in Inglewood California’s SoFi Stadium on February 13th for sure. I was in the process of making travel plans before the Omicron variant and the meat of the AFC West part of the schedule hit.
For the second season in a row, the Dolphins went into week 17 in pole position for the final AFC Wildcard playoff spot with their destiny in their own hands. Granted this season has an extra game and an expanded format which created an extra playoff spot, but still, all they had to do was win out and they were in. It sounds so easy when people say it that way: “Win and they’re in,” as if winning in the NFL is easy or a given. The odds are not in your favor no matter how much of your own destiny you think you control when you have to go on the road in a cold bad weather game against arguably one of the best teams in the conference. The odds are not in your favor when Dolphins teams historically always play horribly in cold bad weather games with a playoff berth on the line. Just flashback to week 17 of last season when the Phins went up to Western New York with everything to play for and got destroyed by a Buffalo Bills team that should have been resting their starters.
The New Year’s Day game turned out to be a culmination of 2021 Razorback football. We were treated to a little bit of everything. K.J.
