KSU Shines Friday Nite!

True Sophomore quarterback Avery Johnson put on a show for us on Friday night!  The young dual threat phenom threw for 156 yards and two touchdowns while running for 117 yards.  His arm talent is evident as the ball whips out of his hand on target.  His speed stuns defenses as they struggle to comprehend how the quarterback is one of the quickest players on the field.

Though Johnson’s first drive of the game ended in a touchdown, he had a couple of overthrows and hard balls.  Once he settled into the game, he was able to pick the Arizona defense apart on demand.

Avery Johnson is able to play as well as he did on Friday for several reasons.  First, the Wildcats had two warm up games leading into conference play.  This allowed Johnson to gain valuable live fire reps in a relatively non-threatening environment.  As it turned out, Tulane gave the Wildcats some adversity.  This game was important to show Johnson and the Wildcats that they can succeed despite difficulties.

KSU’s veteran squad also allows Avery Johnson to develop.  Coach Klieman is fortunate to have the luxury of developing a young quarterback with veterans around him.  Several of the linemen and tight ends are juniors and seniors.  DJ Giddens, a stalwart at running back, is also a junior.  Finally, the Wildcats are packed with veterans on defense.

Arizona is not a slouch.  They came into the game ranked 20th in the country.  Their offense features break out star Noah Fifita (quarterback) and future NFL star Tetairoa McMillan (wide receiver).  They carved up the Wildcat defense as they connected for 11 receptions and 138 yards.  McMillan caught over 300 yards in receptions his first game of this year.  Still, the KSU defense only bent.  They did not break.  Austin Romaine patrolled the middle while the defensive line pressured Fifta.  Finally, the Wildcat defensive backs all tackled well space.

KSU special teams is playing to the standard.  New addition Dylan Edwards showcased his speed on a punt return for a touchdown.  The Wildcat kick coverage is punishing.  However, Chris Tennant still needs to work on his field goal accuracy.  KSU special teams will need to continue to remain consistent as the season unfolds.

This was a great showing for Kansas State’s first game against a ranked conference opponent.  On to BYU.
