College Football Rollup Week 8

UTSA

Are you sick and tired of the upsets this season? I am not! College football this summer and fall has been the gift that keeps on giving and gift-wrapped upsets are what we are continuing to find under our early Christmas trees. There were some close calls, a blue blood falling to a rising program, and some ranked versus unranked defeats. Christmas came early for the Illini and Manny Diaz’s tenure in Miami got up from the mat with a desperately needed win over a Power 5 team. With that said let’s get into the 2021 College Football Rollup Week 8 Edition.

Coastal Carolina got the upsets going with a midweek 3-point loss to unranked conference opponent Appalachian State. We should have known since Wednesday night what kind of crazy week we would be in store for after this one.

The midshipmen of Navy gave the #2 ranked Cincinnati Bearcats all that they could handle in a tough battle that Cincy barely escaped from. 27-20 was the final, but it felt a lot closer than that.

The fans in Beaver Stadium showed up by the hundreds of thousands and were shocked by a stunning takedown of their team by the fighting Illini. No one saw this upset coming and if they tell you that they knew this outcome would happen in Champaign- they’re lying.

Michigan stayed undefeated by laying down the law on Northwestern. This sets up the first top 10 showdown between Michigan and Michigan State where they are both highly ranked and undefeated for the first time in over 50 years. Taking early bets on this Great Lakes State matchup. Who ya got?

Michigan

Oklahoma struggled with Kansas early but pulled off a 12 point win behind the dual threat ability of Caleb Williams. Maybe Spencer Rattler considers the Jayhawks as a transfer portal destination for next season?

Wake Forest continues as the sole undefeated team in the ACC Atlantic with a win in a high scoring basketball score affair over Army.

BYU finds their way back into the top 25 with a squeaky bum 2-point win over Wazzu. In fairness Washington State is still adjusting to the sudden firing of their head coach due to his refusal to take the COVID-19 vaccine. Is Hawaii going to have to Rolovich?

Clemson goes down by 10 to a 1 loss Pitt, who many pundits believe is the most complete team in the ACC. Technically this wasn’t an upset since Pitt was ranked but I for one am not ready to normalize Clemson losing games just yet. Is DJ Uiageleli really this mediocre?

Lane Kiffin fresh off of golfing with neon balls in Tennessee last week, beats the rudderless LSU Tigers by 2 touchdowns. With Coach O headed out of the door at seasons and LSU barely in contention for a bowl birth, do the Bayou Bengals really have anything left to play for other than pride?

Oregon escapes yet another nail biting, sphincter puckering, cardiac arrhythmia causing, hair splitting, fourth quarter clutch performing Pac 12 victory over Chip Kelly’s UCLA. Oregon is playing to keep their college football playoff chances alive but it really feels like eventually another one of these close one score games could go against in the next few weeks. For now they are surviving and advancing.

The undefeated Oklahoma State Cowboys go down in another Iowa State upset special! One thing Iowa State is good at is beating teams that are ranked higher than them. Breece Hall has another record breaking running performance..

Tennessee gave Alabama all that it could handle for a large part of this game. We actually saw Nick Saban crack a smile after this one because he knew how tough a win it really was no matter what the final score was. Playoff hopes are still alive for now in Tuscaloosa but their drop in form the last few weeks has become a bit concerning to those in Roll Tide nation.

San Diego State knocks off Air Force to complete the clean sweep over the armed forces schools this weekend. It wasn’t a runaway win though. San Diego won by less than a touchdown and PAT. The Marines and Coast Guard were on their customary perpetual bye weeks this weekend.

UTSA keeps winning, gets to 8-0, and finally gets some national recognition by cracking the top 25 rankings after their 45-16 win over Louisiana Tech.

Ohio State laid the smackdown and the people’s elbow on Indiana! They should have brought out the mercy rule running clock for this one.

Texas A&M climbs back into the top 15 with a decisive 30-point win over the Gamecocks of South Carolina. The Aggie offense actually scored some points in this one and South Carolina still needs to change their team name to anything but the “Gamecocks.” It’s time.
