THE WIN.
Rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy lead the team in receptions, yards and touchdowns. Worthy’s success tonight is indicative of Andy Reid’s machinations and Patrick Mahomes’s inexorable execution. Coach Reid knew he had to find some offense outside of Travis Kelce because the Bills have always found a way to defend Kelce. Reid turned to Worthy, JuJu Smith-Schuster and Hollywood Brown and was not disappointed.
Andy Reid and Steve Spagnuolo know how to win. They knew this game was going to be an even match and go right down to the wire. Both coaches are masters at calling the right play at the right time.
At the end of the game with minutes to go, Spags called a weak-side corner blitz on 4th and 5. The defensive line broke loose and Allen threw a pop fly as George Karloftis wrapped him up. The ball was almost snagged by tight-end Dalton Kincaid. Almost…..
Then, a few plays later, Coach Reid calls a crossing flare route to Samaje Perine who stepped onto the field for the first time in the game. Lining up on Mahomes right, Perine ran wide open as he cut thru the left side of the formation. Mahomes knew Perine would be open because he was Mahomes first read at the snap of the ball. The 17-yard play iced the game.

SO YOU ARE SAYING THERE IS A CHANCE…
The Bills had their chances. In fact, the Bills defense forced the Chiefs to punt their first two possessions of the 2nd half. The Bills pulled ahead by a point after the first punt. That was their last lead of the game.
On the Bills next possession the Chiefs allowed the Bills to convert one fourth down but not two. On a fourth and inches play, the Chiefs defensive line found the intestinal fortitude to stone Josh Allen at the line of scrimmage. Though the ball may have crossed the line of scrimmage, the play was still active, and he was not down. Allen was downed when his shoulder hit the turf short of the line to gain. Five plays later, the Chiefs were in the end-zone and the rest is history.
During the game, the Bills found some offense thru running the ball. However, their only effective runner was James Cook who carried the rock only thirteen times for 85 yards and two touchdowns. Curiously, during the Bill’s last drive, Cook was not on the field. This is puzzling because Cook is their best receiver in the running back room as evidenced by his three receptions for 49 years in this game.
With 3:33 left in the game and all of their timeouts, the Bills could have ran the ball but they chose not to. Even with their decision to throw, Cook would have been an excellent outlet receiver for Josh Allen and he wasn’t even on the field when it mattered most.
A PAIR OF GENUISES.
Coach Reid ran some interesting formations this afternoon. One of his favorite running formations featured three players in the backfield with Patrick Mahomes. Two players would flank either side of Mahomes in the shotgun with a running back stationed directly behind the quarterback. Sometimes the flanking players would be tight ends. Sometimes it would be a fullback and a running back. A few times Worthy lined up next to Mahomes in this configuration.
Coach Reid also ran a lot of two back formations from the gun and Worthy would take the place of one of those backs. In fact, Worthy lined up all over the formation today. He lined up at all of the wide receiver positions and was almost always in motion. Today, Worthy was the x-factor that helped soften up the Bill’s defense for passing exploitation.
Defensively the front four managed to pressure Josh Allen just enough. During his first possession he almost threw two interceptions. Timely blitz calls by Coach Spags put the Chiefs defense over the edge. He can call a blitz from anywhere and he isn’t afraid to put his players in zero coverage when he does it. The defense suffered a couple of big plays to Mack Hollins up the seam because of his zero coverage calls. Yet, the Chiefs likely won the game in the end with the weakside corner blitz on the 4th and 5.

WHAT TO DO WITH GREATNESS.
We are witnessing greatness. The Chief’s core of greatness is Coach Reid, Coach Spagnuolo, Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and Chris Jones. They have played and coached in the Chief’s last four Super Bowls. Tom Brady’s Tampa Bay Buccaneer squad is the only team to figure out how to beat the Chiefs in the Super Bowl.
Our kids will look back and ask what it was like to watch Patrick Mahomes and company. We will regale them with our experiences…and lament that we can no longer bask in today’s present. Kung Fu Panda’s Master Oogway teaches us the way. “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery and today is a gift. That’s why its called the present.” Enjoy and appreciate the greatness of the Kansas City Chiefs now, for we know not how long it will last.
