Miami head coach Mike McDaniel said after the game that he wanted to see his team fight through adversity in a game where they fell behind, but he did not realize that his team would take him so literally. What this proves is that the Dolphins now have the talent and resiliency to stare defeat in the face and defiantly refuse to go down. This proves that Tua has the heart of a champion and is a leader of men even when the circumstances are dire.
The Miami Dolphins are officially off and flying under the leadership of Mike McDaniel with a home win over the New England Patriots. It seems the last few years that on opening week it has become a ritual to play against Bill Belichick and the Patriots. Tua Tagovailoa is undefeated in four games against one of the greatest coaches of all time, which is no small accomplishment. For two decades the Dolphins have served as a proverbial doormat for the Patriots and since the Dolphins drafted Tua, those fortunes have changed significantly. The tables have now turned as the Dolphins and Bills now sit atop the AFC East. The Dolphins are off to such a hot start that the sauna like conditions inside the stadium were no match for the heat generated outside the stadium as someone decided it would be a good idea to put a barbecue grill under their car where all of the gasoline and oil is situated and completely torched eleven cars outside.
Considering the upsets, near upsets, and injuries that occurred across the country in college football on Saturday, taking a 23-point win with no major injuries for granted is something that I am not prepared to do at this juncture. The Miami Hurricanes are 2-0 and while at times they have not looked good while doing it, there are times where they have flashes of dominance that give the skeptics some temporary relief. For context, Notre Dame shockingly fell at home to Marshall. Texas A&M’s lack of discipline on the defensive line cost them at home against Appalachian State. Those five-star recruits in the greatest class of all time have not come of age for the Aggies just yet. Injuries plagued Pitt at home against Tennessee. Slovis went down and their backup was banged up, or they probably beat the Vols instead of losing in overtime. I personally feel Texas got robbed of 2 points when they had that safety taken off the board. But even still, #1 Alabama barely got out of Austin with their scalp on their heads after a last second kick sealed their 1-point victory.
The Mario Cristobal era kicked off with a bang on Saturday as they easily dispatched the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats 70-13 at Hard Rock Stadium. The Canes did what they were supposed to do. The Miami Hurricanes handled the FCS opponent in decisive fashion and scored 10 touchdowns (9 offensive and 1 pick six). The fresh look Hurricanes covered the spread and if you bet the over, then you were an incredibly happy camper when you cashed in your betting ticket. All-in-all it was a good show for the 50,000 plus fans who braved the Florida summer heat, tailgated then attended the game. However, there are some fans who are unhappy with the team display on Saturday. Specifically, some fans are concerned with the lack of production against an FCS secondary.
When the Big 10 raided the Pac-12 for UCLA and USC, I was one of those people who was staunchly against the Miami Hurricanes leaving the ACC for greener pastures and joining a super conference. Some of Miami’s best years as an athletic force in football came when we were independent or in an itty-bitty conference like the Big East. There is some nostalgia in being the bosses of our own domain. I remember those days quite fondly. I tend to prefer to go against the grain and not want to conform to what everyone else is doing. Historically, the University of Miami Hurricanes have been in the business of setting trends, not following them. For all my anglers and fishers out there, I love to be the big fish in my own pond. We as the Canes family thrived in that harsh environment no matter how lonely it seemed. Even though Miami wears the black eye of never having won the ACC Football championship since joining it, the U’s brand carries some serious weight in the ACC. Plus, our basketball playing brothers have had our backs from an ACC title winning perspective.
Stephen Ross is not the best owner of a sports franchise out there. I acknowledge that fact. Conversely, Ross is not the worst either. The guy has invested his own money in the team, stadium, and the community. Ross self-funded the stadium renovations, added a roof so that we did not have to sit in the hot sun or rain anymore, and he brought many world class events back to Miami Gardens. These events included but were not limited to the Super Bowl, the NCAA football championship, F1 Miami Grand Prix, Miami Open Tennis Tournament, soccer matches of European champions, Rolling Loud Music festival, a future World Cup, and he also built a new world class practice facility for the Dolphins on site as well. These are things that many other owners would not do. Those things count for something because they stimulate the local economy.
It was supposed to be the last preseason friendly before the games got real. A meaningless match where both teams got to get some of their players some time to stretch their legs and pick up a not so important trophy as an obligatory byproduct, but the 2022 version of the Community Shield was anything but an exhibition match or a friendly. The mutual respect between Liverpool and Manchester City coupled with their respective competitive spirits produced an atmosphere of a contentious cup final that both sides were desperate to win on Saturday at King Power Stadium, the usual home of the Leicester City Foxes that had to serve as the host venue for this event due to the Women’s Euro Final behind held the following day at Wembley Stadium. Both teams fielded strong opening rosters and right from the kickoff you could tell that this was not a match that either side wanted to concede to the other.
In the most must win of must win circumstances, Wardell Stephen Curry II stared into the green abyss that is TD Garden and he didn’t blink. The arena was going mad with deafening noise around him from the moment he stepped on the floor. A Boston fanbase desperate for their first championship in over a decade was so close they could taste it. All the Celtics had to do was stop 30 from going for 30 and they would put a 3-1 stranglehold on the series. However, the dish that Chef Curry was serving up was not what gang green ordered. Chef Curry with the pot was serving up sweet revenge and you better believe it was served as bitterly cold as a Boston winter. Whenever the crowd is at a deafening frenzied fever pitch and Curry hits a deep 3 to silence the fans, I call that a “Stephening” of the crowd. That’s exactly what Steph came out and did early by dropping 12 points in the first quarter to keep his team in it when Boston was dominating early but unable to pull away.
