It was important for the 49ers to win game two. They couldn’t start the season 0-2. They needed to beat a divisional rival. They needed to win their home opener. They needed to let Trey Lance build some confidence. They accomplished all these goals except one. During the 49ers second possession, Trey Lance went down with a season ending injury after running quarterback power and breaking his ankle. Lance is done for the season. It is quite an unfortunate circumstance. Lance will lose a year of development on the field. He will lose a year of reps. At the end of the season, the 49ers will have a difficult decision to make. We will cross those bridges later. Let’s discuss the win!
This was a pitiful performance by the Wildcats. While the defense played respectable most of the game, the offense was clunky and lacked rhythm. I am not even sure the Kansas State offense practiced this week. Kansas State failed in three specific areas. They committed too many penalties. They could not convert on third or fourth downs. Lastly, they failed to capitalize on game changing defensive plays.
Whatever it was, two unheralded and unknown players made the difference for the Chiefs on Thursday Night Football. Justin Watson and Jaylen Watson are not superstars or household names. They are fifth round and seventh round picks respectively. However, their opportunistic play won the game for Chiefs this week.
Film doesn’t lie. America’s team, the Dallas Cowboys were embarrassed at home. Perhaps the writing was on the wall. In the off season we all noted that the Cowboys declined to resign La’el Collins and Cedrick Wilson. The Cowboys traded veteran receiver Amari Cooper. They made no moves with the backfield, and they failed to restock the offensive line. Then, during the pre-season they lost Tyron Smith to a catastrophic injury. The Cowboys started the season with only two parameter players that Dak Prescott had familiarity with; CeeDee Lamb and Dalton Schultz. Lamb led the team last year in receptions and yards.
The Chiefs flat out stunned the Cardinals in Phoenix. Perhaps they were not ready for the new look of the Chiefs offense. The Kansas City Chiefs offense is a bit different this year. Coach Andy Reid is emphasizing a much more efficient passing attack. 26 of their plays 66 plus plays on Sunday were executed out of two tight end sets. They mixed in the run game with the pass, rushing the ball 27 out of 66 plays. It is a full team effort on the offensive side of the ball, allowing most of the receivers and backs an opportunity to positively impact the game. Coach Reid is building an offense of role players, rather than superstars. He understands that teams usually win Super Bowls rather than superstars.
The 49ers lose at Soldier Field. It was a game they were supposed to win and win by a wide margin. The weather had a say. The Bears defense had a say. However, the biggest concern is the discipline of the 49ers themselves. Having watched them live in their last preseason game at Houston, I noted it but quickly dismissed the issue. It seems the 49ers lack of discipline in game three of the pre-season has followed them from Houston to Chicago. Eleven penalties for close to 100 yards cannot happen.
