“And then there were eight.” It sounds so surreal, but our beloved Miami Hurricanes are in the “Elite Eight,” for the first time in the history of the school. To say that I am proud of these boys is a major understatement. This is the kind of March Madness run that I always dreamed of for my alma mater, but if I am being honest, I never thought that I would actually live to see it. The University of Miami was a football school when I attended it. Even though the football program has fallen on hard times recently, it still is a football school through and through. The 5 national championships that we have won and 2 that were stolen from us made sure that football was engrained into our school’s DNA. You feel the weight of that football tradition the moment you step onto that campus in Coral Gables.

Before the game tipped off, Charles Barkley told us that he was “nervous.” He looked visibly concerned about the matchup problems the Miami Hurricanes presented for his beloved Auburn Tigers. At halftime he looked even more shook though his alma mater had rallied back from being down by 9 to make it a 1 point game at halftime. Now we know why. Although curiously unranked all season, this 2021-2022 Canes team is for real. Chuck also stated that if Auburn won, he might take his shirt off. I want to personally thank Coach Larrañaga and the boys for making sure there was no chance any of us would be forced to witness that visual.

Canes Defeat Trojans in NCAA Tournament

It was a tough hard-fought battle between two talented teams, but unfortunately in March Madness, only one can come out victorious. On Friday that was the Miami Hurricanes. The wise Pat Riley who made his bones in Los Angeles but now runs the show in Miami once famously said, “there’s winning and there’s misery.” That’s the binary opportunity that sports awards those who participate. It’s an emotional duality separated by a razor thin line. Winning is joyous. Losing is misery. In between is the competitiveness that makes sports stressful yet fun. When the clock read zero and the deep three launched by Drew Peterson ricocheted off the backboard, clanked off the rim, and felt harmlessly to the floor, the Miami Hurricanes bench celebrated victoriously while the Southern California Trojan bench were engulfed by the sudden onset of misery.

I know, I know…..It was the Rockets! I know that we must look at everything through that perspective, but man what a great night it was for the Miami Heat as they welcomed the return of Victor Oladipo to the hardwood on Monday night. It felt like a major event day Monday in Miami, even though it was just the lowly Rockets coming to town for an early March regular season matchup. Heat fans all over social media, sports talk radio, and in these hot Dade County streets were buzzing all day about how many minutes Vic would play and how good he would look in game action. The leaks coming from Dipo’s teammates in advance of the game were rave reviews and now we know why. Oladipo looked quick, strong, explosive, and sharp in his limited opportunities!

The Heat Survive Hell Week

Honestly, I was a little nervous coming into this week. This is the week that I circled and referred to as “hell week” when I saw the teams and matchups that the Heat would have to go through. At Chicago, at Milwaukee, at Brooklyn, and then home against the surging 76ers. It was definitely a gauntlet to say the least. A true test to measure what standards the Miami Heat were able to hold and how high their potential ceiling could be in the post season. The Heat did more than survive hell week, they thrived in it. They burned it up and passed the tests with flying colors.

Flores Betrayed the Fins Family

Let me start by saying that I believe that there is merit to the cause of addressing the coaching inequality in the NFL that the lawsuit of Brian Flores brings to light. If the New York Football Giants setup a sham interview with Flores to fulfill some antiquated Rooney Rule diversity quota while knowing they were going to hire Brian Daboll, then that is something that should be fully investigated and challenged. It is hard to explain that almost 20 years after the ratification of the Rooney Rule there is only one African American coach in a league that is 70% African American. The only rational thought is that there is clearly a systematic issue when it comes to hiring minorities in the NFL. However, this charge has nothing to do with the Dolphins.

A four-team affair with three world class English sides only separated by slivers of silkworm excrement. It seems laughable now that Manchester United were under consideration as a contender early in the season, but when you pull off a shocking signing like the return of one soccer legend or football freak named Cristiano Ronaldo, that’s the kind of attention that you garner for yourself.

Playoff Preview: The Dallas Cowboys Perspective

The Dallas Cowboys had already clinched the NFC East division crown a couple weeks ago thanks to a favorable result from an AFC West showdown (of all matchups) due to an obscure “strength of opponent” tiebreaker. The Eagles were already in the tournament as well and opted to rest some of their starters to be ready for whoever their opponent would be in the Wildcard round. The Cowboys dominated the matchup from start to finish, winning 51-26 while getting whatever they wanted. Dak Prescott was 21/27 with nearly 300 yards and 5 touchdowns while the running game blasted off to the tune of 171 yards. It was total domination. There wasn’t much to play for on either side except for a potential Minshew Magic renaissance, but that never materialized. As a result, the regular season finale became a bit of a snoozefest as both teams already had their eyes on the playoffs, as do we here at JJ Sportsfan. The Miami Heat Have Enough

The Miami Heat have been snake bitten by numerous injuries to their roster but nevertheless they have persisted. These injuries have caused their team MVP Jimmy Butler, their defensive anchor Bam Adebayo, and numerous key rotational players to miss lots of game time. The Heatles also had a multitude of players that missed many games due to being in the COVID-19 health and safety protocols. Pair the thin roster situation with a tough beginning of the season schedule that also featured the most road games in the NBA and it would have been understandable if the Heat would have gone into a bit of a malaise of losses. That has not been the case and it is a true testament to the mantra of this organization, the makeup of this team, and the leadership of their maestro Erik Spoelstra.
